Tarntanya: Heart of Country
acrylic and raffia weaving on canvas
50 x 40 cm
This artwork is a deep offering to Tarntanya, a love held for Kaurna Country, community, and the enduring spirit of our peoples. At its centre is Tarntanya, the red kangaroo dreaming ancestor, carrying the story of how this land was shaped and formed through his dedication. Tarnta shows a living connection to Kaurna lands and his presence in this work represents survival, and the deep responsibility of caring for and belonging to Country. The three hills signify the Adelaide Hills an important and scared site for us as Aboriginal peoples, while the sun shines above providing warmth, life, and heat to our cultural lands. The face of an Elder sits within the middle of the canvas as a strong and guiding source, providing cultural knowledge, safety, and a powerful reminder of the many generations before us who have carried on our culture with resilience and strength. The handprints, symbols of people and meeting places show our community and the Kaurna peoples representing belonging, gathering, support, and our deep connection and love for each other and our land. The weaving rings represent the river reeds found in Adelaide at sites such as the River Torrens and showcase the importance and continuation of Aboriginal cultural practices such as Aboriginal weaving. The feathers are that of the King Quail found across south Australia and reflect our deep love for our animals and their importance to us as Aboriginal people. This artwork shows a story of love, connection, community, and creation across Adelaide.
