This work reflects my Ngarrindjeri understanding of the Dark Emu in the Sky — a powerful creator presence watching over Country. For Ngarrindjeri people, the Emu was not simply an animal but a guide whose movement across the Milky Way signalled seasonal change and cultural practice, including the time to hunt emus or gather eggs. Formed by the dark spaces within the Milky Way rather than the stars themselves, the Dark Emu reminds us that knowledge lives in careful observation of sky and Country. This painting is my personal interpretation, honouring the depth and continuity of Ngarrindjeri cultural knowledge.
